A decade of storytelling from Northeast

Dear contributors, readers, viewers and listeners,

We are pleased to share with you the happy moments of NEZINE achieving a significant milestone- ten years of storytelling from India’s Northeast. When majority of mainstream media gave in to illusory narrative of shrinking digital attention span, we remained committed to long-form journalism. We choose nuanced and in-depth reporting, deeply researched articles over revenue-dominated journalism and attention span set by digital algorithms. We remained steadfast in not letting views, likes and shares decide our issues, questions, format of candid conversations with our guests from the region on literature, culture, Art, drama, political cartoon etc. We did not chase numbers but we are happy that during this ten-year-long journey we have published over 1000 stories. We have not put NEZINE’s repository of multimedia stories, articles, documentaries, photo stories, photo essays, podcast, book reviews, online discussions, digital interviews behind a paywall but we are continuing the search for a pragmatic revenue model to sustain.

Over the past one decade, this bilingual online magazine in English and Assamese has become a unique space for publication short stories, poems, novels published by creative writers from the region and their translated version in both the languages. We are profoundly thankful to all the creative writers who made it possible.

As we reflect on our journey, we are happy to note that the trusted alliance with Journalism and Mass Communication Departments and other departments of different universities and colleges of the region facilitated us to work on collaborative reporting projects with about 100 journalism students under NEZINE Internship programme run twice a year.

This exciting and inspiring journey would not have been possible without your unwavering support to our endeavour to make NEZINE bridge the information gap on India’s Northeast. We are deeply grateful to you for making this journey a reality.

Your encouragement has emboldened us undertake more in-depth and investigative reporting projects, new digital experiment of nuanced storytelling, long conversations to resist simplifications of layered complexities of issues unique to the region as a whole or any of its eight states as we take another small step for the new decade of NEZINE journey.
