In the serene hills of Soreng district, Sikkim, five small villages are experiencing a powerful transformation. What once stood as communities limited by resources and opportunities are now buzzing with innovation, dignity, and hope — thanks to the collaboration between AROH Foundation and the SBI Foundation under the Gram Seva Program.

This partnership is more than development; it is about creating pathways of self-reliance, empowerment, and sustainable growth.

Digital Empowerment: Opening New Horizons

The Gram Seva Kendras have become lifelines for villagers. Services once hours away are now at their fingertips — from printing essential documents to accessing government schemes. Farmers are adopting modern agricultural practices after learning through digital platforms, witnessing increased yields and inspiring peers. For many, these hubs are the first step into a digitally connected future.

Education: Planting Seeds of Aspiration

Children across villages are now experiencing the joy of learning in smart classrooms and science labs. Stories like Christina from Budang, who once struggled but now dreams of becoming a teacher, highlight the impact of remedial classes and scholarships. Inter-school debates, cultural events, and sports activities are shaping a new generation that is confident, curious, and ambitious.

Health and Hygiene: Restoring Dignity

Health initiatives have gone beyond facilities — they have restored dignity and confidence. Renovated community toilets in Singling empower women’s mobility, while nutrition gardens ensure healthy meals for schoolchildren. Health camps, first-aid training, and menstrual hygiene workshops have broken taboos and equipped villagers with tools to live healthier lives.

Women at the Forefront of Change

Through Prerna Centres and skill development programs, women are becoming changemakers. Tailoring training has turned homemakers into entrepreneurs, while Self-Help Groups now manage polyhouse farms, cultivating and selling vegetables year-round. These women are no longer silent contributors but are breadwinners and leaders within their communities.

Infrastructure that Inspires

From solar streetlights in Mangsari making evenings safer, to renovated roads connecting farmers to markets in Budang, the villages are experiencing infrastructural upliftment that has reduced costs, improved safety, and boosted morale. Community kitchens and centres are now vibrant spaces for training, collaboration, and celebrations.

Nurturing Body, Mind, and Spirit

Development here is holistic. Children run to open gyms after school, villagers engage in awareness sessions on banking, cyber safety, mental health, and social issues, and communities are learning to grow not just economically but socially and emotionally.

A Blueprint for Rural Transformation

The collaboration between AROH Foundation and SBI Foundation demonstrates that true development means touching every part of life — education, health, livelihood, infrastructure, and awareness.

Together, they are not just changing villages; they are nurturing self-reliant communities where dreams flourish, futures are secured, and every individual has the chance to thrive.

In Soreng’s villages, one message is loud and clear:
When opportunities arrive, communities don’t just adapt — they thrive. This is the power of partnership. This is the promise of rural India.
