Production of natural gas is the highest in Assam among all states, but total household Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections in the state is less than 50,000. Gujarat produces less than one third of natural gas production in Assam but has 30.15 lakh household PNG connections.
Official data presented in the Rajya Sabha also shows Uttar Pradesh, which does not produce oil or gas, has 13.94 lakh domestic PNG connections. Even Tripura has more household PNG connections (59,646) even though its natural gas production is less than half of total production in Assam
Data from an official release of the Press Information Bureau shows that production of natural gas in Assam increased to 3371 Million Metric Standard Cubic Meter (MMSCM) in 2021-2022 from 3141 MMSCM in 2019-20. In Gujarat, the production of natural gas decreased to 1017 MMSCM in 2021-22 from 1342 MMSCM in 2019-20.
Official data also shows that Rajasthan, the second largest natural gas producing state, has so far provided PNG connections to 2.27 lakh households. Production of natural gas in the state increased from 1883 MMSCM in 2019-20 to 2619 MMSCM.
