In an effort to reconnect children with nature and foster environmental responsibility at an early age, leading biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak (www.aaranyak.org) successfully organised a ‘Nature Learning cum Biodiversity Documentation’ programme at Khanapara Adarsha LP School, Guwahati.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and teachers and aimed to strengthen the bond between young learners and their natural surroundings through experiential learning.

In today’s rapidly urbanising landscape, especially in cities like Guwahati, the direct connection between humans and nature has significantly diminished, with children being among the most affected. Recognising this growing disconnect, Aaranyak has been consistently working to inspire positive attitudes, emotional well-being, social harmony and environmental awareness through nature-based education.

The programme was led by Aaranyak’s Young Professionals (YPs) under the guidance of Jayanta Kumar Pathak, Assistant Director, Environment Education and Capacity Building Division (EECBD) of Aaranyak. Students actively explored local biodiversity by observing their immediate environment and identifying various species of flora and fauna. They were also introduced to basic scientific field techniques, including the use of instruments such as an anemometer, helping them understand practical applications of science in nature studies.

A key highlight of the programme was the nature journaling activity, where students closely observed their surroundings and expressed their learning through drawings and written reflections. This activity not only enhanced observation and analytical skills but also nurtured creativity and a deeper emotional connection with nature.

The programme was facilitated by YPs Bhanita Deka, Dipankar Mazumder, Hrishita Nath, Jyotishmita Kashyap and Kaushik Ranjan Saikia, who guided the students throughout the activities. The event was coordinated by Prajnyan Sarma, Project Coordinator, and Andrew Roy, Young Professional, whose support ensured active and enthusiastic participation by the students.

Aaranyak expressed sincere appreciation for the cooperation and support extended by Namita Baishya, Head Teacher, along with faculty members Sabina Zesmin and Tarpana Phukan of Khanapara Adarsha LP School.

It is noteworthy that Aaranyak, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Assam, Kamrup Metro, has been consistently implementing awareness programmes on water conservation, contributing to Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Under this initiative, Andrew Roy has played a significant role in enhancing students’ understanding of water sources, their importance, and the urgent need for conservation, thereby nurturing environmental curiosity and responsibility among young learners.

The programme was conducted under the “Mobius Young Climate Leaders for Himalayan Development – North East India Initiative”, implemented by Aaranyak in partnership with YouthNet and the Mobius Foundation.
