Higher education in Northeast: Assam and Tripura record the lowest Gross Enrolment Ratio for females

The Recently published All India Survey on Higher Education Report, 2020-21 has revealed that Assam and Tripura have the lowest gross enrolment ratio for females in higher education of 18.4 among all northeastern states. This is much below the national average of 27.9.

Sikkim topped the list with a ratio of 44. Manipur is placed second with 38.6. Sikkim also topped the list of overall gross enrolment ratio with 39.9.

In the category of gross enrolment ratio of male, Nagaland recorded the lowest rank among the northeastern states with a ratio of 15.4, and Assam ranked second from the bottom end with 16.8.

The national average of male gross enrolment ratio is 27.3.

Tripura also has the lowest female Scheduled Tribe (ST) gross enrolment ratio of 12.4 among all northeastern states. Sikkim tops the list of female gross enrolment ratio with 41.6. The national average of female gross enrolment ratio of ST in higher education is 19.1.

In the category of gross enrolment ratio of ST male too, Tripura ranks the lowest in northeast with 14, Nagaland ranks second from bottom end with 15.2. The national average of male ST gross enrolment ratio is 18.1.

In the category of gross enrolment ratio of Scheduled Caste (SC) female too, Tripura ranks the lowest among all the northeastern states with 15.8. Assam records second from below with SC gross enrolment ratio of 19. With a gross enrolment ratio of 168.2 Mizoram topped the list. The national average of SC female gross enrolment ratio is 23.9.
