Only 18.7 percentage of students in Standard VIII in government schools in rural Meghalaya are able to correctly solve a numerical division problem, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)-Rural, 2022. The percentage of students in Standard VIII who can do a numerical division (3-digit by 1-digit) in the state has also dropped drastically from previous ASER survey conducted in 2018. The percentage was 23.3 in 2018.
This is the lowest percentage among all northeastern states.
In Assam, which figures at the second position from bottom in the list, the percentage of students in government schools in Standard VIII who can solve a numerical division has gone down from 28.1 during 2022 to 21.7 during 2016.
Meghalaya also recorded the lowest percentage of students in government schools in rural areas in standard III who can do at least a 2-digit numerical subtraction in the region. Only 15.3 per cent students of standard III can do at least subtraction, the Report states. However, the state has shown a little progress from 14.2 per cent during ASER, 2018.
In rural Assam, the percentage of students in standard III in government schools, who are able at least do a subtraction has gone down from 23.4 during ASER 2018 to 15.8 during ASER 2022.
Manipur topped the list among all northeastern states in both the categories. The percentage of government school children in Standard III in rural areas of the states, who can do at least subtraction in the state has gone up from 53.5 in 2018 to 56.2 during 2022, according to the latest survey.
However, the percentage of students in Standard VIII who can do division in Manipur, has gone down from 62.3 in 2018 to 52.7 during 2022, even though the state topped the list of all northeastern states in this category.

“ASER 2022 is the first field-based 'basic' nationwide ASER after a gap of 4 years. It comes at a time when children are back in school after an extended period of school closure. Evidence on the status of children's schooling and foundational learning will help us understand how best to support them going forward, and ASER 2022 attempts to address this urgent need, ” adds the report.
The survey covered 616 districts, 3,74,554 households, 19,060 villages, 6,99,507 children and involved 27,536 volunteers across the country. In Assam, it covered 740 schools in 26 districts.
