Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Government of India in collaboration with leading biodiversity conservation orgaisation  Aaranyak (www.aaranyak.org) conducted a joint programme in Jagiroad College (Autonomous) on the occasion of World Wildlife Week 2025. 

With collaboration from the College's Zoology Department, a one-day sensitisation event was conducted on Wildlife Conservation through Wildlife Crime Mitigation. It was attended by around over 190 students and professors of various disciplines along with Zoology.

The programme was inaugurated by Jagiroad College principal Dr. Bhaben Ch. Neog who opened the programme with an encouraging speech about the need to protect the environment and how being the voice of those who cannot speak should be a mission for every citizen of India.


The event was mainly facilitated by Robin Borah, Operation Assistant, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (SRO), Guwahati who also stressed on the growing need to curb crimes against wildlife. Nabajit Barman, a prominent conservationist of NE India spoke on Wildlife Laws and the common Do's and Don'ts wrt to wildlife around us. 

The main technical sessions included a presentation by Ivy Farheen Hussain, Senior Project Officer and Analyst, Legal and Advocacy Division, Aaranyak who spoke on the delicate ecological balance of nature- and how each and every animal plays a crucial role in the survival of another animal. She spoke on zoonotic diseases and how wildlife crimes are related to them. She ended her talk with the current scenario of wildlife in the world and India and also the success stories of the Indian Govt's successful wildlife protection.

Another technical session was led by Arpan Baruah, Bird Guide, Tesia Camp, Lakhimpur who spoke on the various venomous and non-venomous snakes and the crucial do's and don'ts when it comes to snake bites. 

The programme also had Jagiroad's own Alumni, Champak Deka, a well-recognised conservation photographer, documentary-maker and tourism entrepreneur who showcased a documentary on Kaziranga and inspired the students to follow a life of conservation. Himadri Bhuyan, a prominent wildlife and astrophotographer also attended the event and facilitated the documentation process. 

The sessions ended with a vote of thanks by Achintya Kumar Keot, Head, Zoology Department who expressed gratitude to the resource-person for the day's event. He, himself a conservationist from an early age, expressed his desire to hold such programs in the future and encouraged the students to be active in protecting the nature around them. Dr. Dipti Thakuria, Assistant Professor, Radhika Rimal, Assistant Professor and Dr. Utpal Rajguru, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology also assisted and attended the event.
